Adam 22: Dirtbag or Not?

Recently, a lot of things have been said regarding Adam 22’s past actions and his agenda in BMX. A lot of people haven’t seen all of what ha s been put on the table, or haven’t had time to dig through pages of social media, so I am going to lay it all out for you guys.

All of this began when a former TCU employee Devin Feil, posted an example of Adam22’s hypocrisy on his Instagram, involving how A22 had posted on his twitter that media companies post things that “make riding look corny”, and Devin added a picture of the “Nasty Mondayz” logo, a popular TCU series that features riders seriously injuring themselves, insinuating that Adam was doing the very thing he was speaking out against. Then, Devin continued posting about A22, this time with examples of homophobic hate speech and bigotry towards Islam and Christianity, next to twitter posts with Adam denouncing homophobes and stating that he was not a bigot.
I thought that this was all, but boy it escalated fast. Devin posted a screenshot of Cass Nicole aka Charlie Crumlish’s girlfriend’s account of a time when Adam22 assaulted her. The full account from her was very long, but here is a tldr; Adam22 goes to a bar, gets shitfaced and does a lot of coke. He, Charlie, her, and Adam’s then girlfriend got into a car with Charlie driving, A22 in the passenger seat, and their girlfriends sitting in the back. According to Ms. Nicole, she was talking, when Adam told her that if she didn’t shut the fuck up, then he would “make her shut up”, and then began choking her, until Charlie pulled him off of her. She then went on to say that Adam had continued to try to cause problems between her and Charlie. Next to this screenshot of her story, Devin placed A22’s twitter post saying that “if you tell and old fight story about me and don’t mention that I had just consumed a mountain of cocaine, that seems disingenuous to me”, suggesting that Adam thinks that intoxication is an excuse for violence. Then Devin went on to make accusations that Adam doesn’t care about the BMX industry and possibly skewed statistics in TCU’s investors’ portfolio.
Adam then posted a full apology  on TCU, apologizing for the things he did, adding that he has changed a lot since these incidents occurred, and even talked to Ms. Nicole for multiple hours and apologized, and she confirmed in the comments that he did in fact talk to her and that she appreciates his apology.
Probably, by now your head is probably spinning, your subconscious screaming out that Adam is a ‘bad man rabble rabble rabble’ and priming to post on facebook telling everyone to stop supporting TCU. I felt this way for a bit as well, until I took time and really thought about everything. First of all, why would someone whose business endeavors depend on BMX, hate BMX? Second of all, regarding the homophobia and bigotry, how many of you NEVER say “gay” or any of its derivations and NEVER are racist in any way, shape or form? I for sure am not, none of us are absolutely perfect, and though I’m not Christian, the saying “let the man without sin cast the first stone” fits very well in this situation. In addition to this, these incidents when he used hate speech were years ago, not days, and since then he has considerably reduced the amount of tweets that use hate speech. We all make mistakes, and say things we really don’t mean, and I feel that it isn’t right to judge someone by what they said on twitter a year or more ago.
As for the accusations of assault against former Vitalbmx site moderator and now web developer for Ride Bmx Zach Krejmas, filmer Mike Mastroni, and against Cass Nicole, I have quite the case of mixed feelings. The fights with Mastroni and Krejmas were short lived, and have since been forgotten about. Fights happen, especially when tensions are high from being on a trip with someone for days. We all fight, it’s been part of society since the dawn of man, and there is no ignoring that, but I still feel that these situations resulted because of overreactions and that they could have been avoided. As for his assault of Ms. Nicole, I really want to hate him for that. It’s despicable to assault someone without provocation, and being under the influence is the absolute worst excuse for behavior in the book. However, I believe that everyone deserves a second chance, and though Adam apologizing might not completely change my opinion of him, it certainly does help, plus reforming your cocaine habit is definitely a step in the right direction. You can hate him or love him, but I urge you to think for yourself and make decisions on unbiased facts, because believing everything someone says never ends up well.
Aside from this, I feel like what Devin has is a personal problem with A22 and his business, and wants revenge for an unknown reason. At this point, Cass Nicole has deleted her comment that Devin had screenshotted and posted commented that she doesn’t appreciate “people using my personal life and experiences to fuel a personal vendetta against someone and their company under the guise of concern for issues of physical abuse against women”, essentially denouncing Devin and his “crusade” against Adam 22 and The Come Up, and now Charlie Crumlish is asking that people stop using him and his girlfriend as pawns. I wholeheartedly agree with Ms. Nicole and Charlie, in that this isn't about anyone but Devin and Adam, and therefore it shouldn't involve anyone except them, and content regarding them should stay separate from the conflict between Adam and Devin. Even if the personal past of a BMX'er doesn’t interest or concern you, I would greatly recommend that you take note and follow this story as it breaks, as this could directly affect the biggest source for BMX videos in the entire industry.
